On Thursday afternoon, the following students competed in the First Annual Spanish Spelling Bee, Gerardo Garza (a 5th grader), Angel Luna Cruz (a 6th grader), and Ian Hernandez (a 7th grader). Back in December these boys were given over 200 Spanish words to study, learn and memorize correct spelling and any special characters the words may have. These boys accepted the challenge. At yesterday’s Spelling Bee they saw their hard work pay off. Gerardo placed 3rd, Angel placed 2nd and, not missing one single word presented to him, Ian is our Spelling Bee Champion!! Ian and Angel will represent RISD at the Regional Spanish Spelling Bee to be held in Corpus Christi on February 11th, where they will be competing against 6 other local Districts. The top 2 winners will advance to the State competition and the top 10 at State will advance to the National Spanish Spelling Bee to be held in Albuquerque, NM, this summer. “I am beyond proud of how these boys competed and can’t wait to see how they do at Regionals”, stated their coach, Mrs. Chris Rendon.
A big thank you goes out to the SSB judges, Mrs. Felicita Serna, Mrs. Susie Saenz and Mr. Roel Saenz. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Artie DeLaRosa for emceeing this event. Thank you, also, to Mr. K and Mrs. Dobson for being great audience members.
A big congratulations to these 3 boys and we wish Ian and Angel good luck at the next level!!
